What is Permeable Paving?

A permeable paving system enables rainfall to soak into the subsoil where it can drain harmlessly away rather than run off into hard pressed drains.

Acorn Contractors are approved by the Marshalls Register of Approved Landscapers and Driveway Contractors. Marshalls has the most comprehensive range of paving products both permeable and impermeable. Both types, with expert installation, will avoid the need for planning permission for most front gardens.

The Priora Pavement Specifier lets you explore the extended range of Priora paving and provides practical pavement design information to simplify the specification of permeable pavements.

The Government has outlined the following:

"Planning permission is now required to lay traditional impermeable driveways that allow uncontrolled runoff of rainwater from front gardens onto roads, because this can contribute to flooding and pollution of watercourses."

If the area of hard surface is constructed using a permeable product such as from Marshalls Priora range or Marshalls Grassguard. There is no limit to size in this case. Standard impermeable paving can be used if provision is made for rainwater from traditional impermeable hard landscaping to drain into a soft landscape such as grass or border planting with sufficient permeability, or into a specially constructed soakaway. If the area of hard surface intended is less than 5 square metres. The new legislation only affects front garden areas. Elsewhere around the house there are no restrictions on hard surfaces at or near ground level.

• The fee for the guarantee is £50 (+ VAT) per £5,000 of the installed value
• Upon receipt of the correctly completed request form and the fee, Marshalls will send you your guarantee usually within 5 days

The Marshalls Register

The Marshalls Register of Approved Landscape Contractors and Driveway Installers is a national network of recommended professionals. Although they are not employed by Marshalls, they agree to abide by our own installation guidlines and are all vetted by Marshalls assessors. In this way, we make sure that your garden or driveway is installed properly, with great attention paid to minimising mess and disruption, so you can be sure of a good job!

How to spot a cowboy

1. If they come knocking because they "just happen to be in the area" – be wary.
   Genuine Marshalls Register Installers will never cold call. If they claim to be genuine Marshalls Register Installers, check with us.
2. If they say they can "start tomorrow" – be wary.
   Reputable installers are in demand and may require several weeks’ notice.
3. Never accept a verbal estimate.
   Insist on a written quotation. Quotes should be written on headed paper with an address and telephone number, not just a mobile number.
4. If you accept the quote, request written confirmation.
   A 'cowboy' will be reluctant to do this, however a written contract is essential.
